CPCB Zonal Office in North Zone was first established at Kanpur in 1988 and was designated as Central Zone Office. The office was entrusted with the responsibility of co-ordination in the Central Zone covering the States of UP, MP and Rajasthan. After establishment of Zonal Office at Bhopal in 1995-96, the office was redesigned as Zonal Office—North and the jurisdiction was re-defined to UP, Punjab, Haryana, HP, J&K and UT Chandigarh. Subsequently, when state of Uttranchal was created by splitting UP State, CPCB Zonal Office – North Continued to maintain its jurisdiction over this newly created state. Uttranchal has now been renamed as Uttarakhand. The CPCB Zonal Office – North has since been shifted from Kanpur to its present location at Lucknow in September 2004.
CPCB Zonal Office (North) has its jurisdiction over entire North India excluding Delhi, which is co-ordinated by Head Office, Delhi. CPCB Zonal Office-North has the responsibility of co-ordination of activities of 6 States i.e. UP, Punjab, Haryana, HP, J&K , Uttarakhand and Union Teritorry, Chandigarh. Project Office at Agra, also falls under jurisdiction of Zonal Office -Lucknow.
